Simple ways to make
your Event Green?

APRIL 6, 2019

In the recent past ‘going green’ has meant much more than passively recycling plastic and is now a way of life; at work, at home or even at events!  However hosting a green event can seem a little overwhelming, especially with the ever growing sustainability checklist. But here’s good news! Making your event eco-friendly is easier now than ever! And don’t worry, it’s not going to be heavy on your pocket either. Here are a few simple tips you can consider while planning your event.

Choosing the Ideal Venue
The largest contributor to your event’s footprint is simply getting people there. Being mindful about the destination, considering where the majority of your guests live, helps a lot. The perfect venue helps set the stage and theme for any event. A beautiful venue also means the need for lesser decor. One of the best ways to cut down on energy is to host an outdoor event and make use of the beautiful natural light. But of course, make sure the weather is just right! The time of year and day are key to having an eco-friendly event.

Go Paperless!
From invites to itineraries, place cards to signages, paper is a significant constituent of the total waste of an event. But the best part, it’s one of the areas that has the simplest eco-friendly swaps! In the current digital age all it takes are a few clicks to get your message across to attendees, while saving precious trees from being cut! For all those times when you can’t do without paper, make sure you opt for tree-free options & vegetable based inks.

Think Unique Decor
From the moment your guests enter, the design of the space makes an impact. Everyone is looking for decor that dazzles their guests and leaves them with a memorable experience. However people unknowingly use unsustainable decor. From non-recyclable materials to abundant flowers being flown in from other countries, decor adds to a high carbon footprint of an event. Go for local seasonal flowers and unique upcycled creations to brighten up your events. For smaller parties, you could actually try your hand out at simple DIY decor! You can go the extra mile by donating all organic materials to NGOs that convert them into useful products.

Food for Thought
Food is the centre of any celebration, and going green doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice taste! Design your menu keeping in mind local seasonal produce and make sure all the delicious food is served in reusable or biodegradable plates. 99.9% of events in India have leftover food, which is almost always thrown away without a second thought. All this completely good extra food can be donated to the needy, because after all, you want to feed mouths & not bins! Less food waste is both a social and environmental gain. Also ditch those plastic water bottles. Set up water filling stations and serve water in reusable glasses.

Conscious Gifting
Gifts need to perfectly complement your eco-friendly event. You don’t want to give gifts that’ll just end up in a closed cupboard. Opt for functional gifts that’ll add value. Plantable or edible favours are a great idea, or support local craft businesses. Oh! And don’t miss out on giving the perfect finishing touch with earth friendly gift wraps. For a totally different option, go for a charity donation to a meaningful cause in your guests’ names in lieu of favours.

Managing all that Trash
When the main aim of an eco-friendly event is to reduce the overall generation of waste and keep it from reaching the landfills, it is only obvious that the trash is managed correctly. Remember, guests will definitely recycle....if they find the right bin. Make sure there are enough bins placed across the event venue with clear labels and instructions regarding segregation. Go one step ahead and have a trained attendant beside every bin to avoid any mishaps.

So if you’re planning to celebrate, why not do it the eco-friendly way? If implementing all of the above seems like a daunting task, don’t worry! Take it one step at a time and choose what is doable for you. Trust us, even a couple of these tricks saves a whole lot of waste, and starts a wave of change towards a greener
Planet Earth. Happy Planning!
